TO THEIR AMAZEMENT, Imo moved into their home the next day and immediately took over. She didn’t like the fact that Katia was running more of a Western household than a Korean one.

“Why haven’t you made kimchi?”

“I’ve tried Imo and it doesn’t turn out that well.”

“If you were paying attention in your classes you probably would have learned something. The bibimbap is soggy, the bulgogi overcooked and the banchan are all cold. I am going to feed my poor Jihan from today; maybe you could learn something.”

“I’m sure you can but he doesn’t mind not having lots of banchan and besides he doesn’t eat that much before his workout.”

“That’s probably because he knows you won’t be able to make any of it. You don’t have anything in the pantry with which I can make something for him. Why isn’t there any radish, seaweed, sesame oil, mulyeot, kim, or soybean paste here? You should have them; they are staple ingredients in every Korean kitchen.”

“Imo, I don’t use any of them so why stock up?”

“From now on things are going to change. True the both of you have decided to Westernize the decor here but you should be following Korean culture as far as everything else is concerned. I’ll send someone to buy the required groceries for you, and tonight I will make us a Korean dinner.”

Katia smiled politely while fuming inside. The first day the woman was here and she was already dictating to Katia how she needed to run her household. She had tried so hard to please her, but all she got was criticism.

Imo could stuff her Korean dinner up her rear end! What incensed here more was that Jihan stayed out of it. Katia cooked what they both liked and the way they liked to eat it. Neither of them was a fan of red meat and they chose to eat simpler meals that were healthy so most of the banchan were weeded out and the bulgogi completely dropped from their diet. Still, he chose to remain silent. He told her she was strong enough to fight her own battles when she mentioned it to him.

For Katia, the battles seemed to be never-ending.

“Katia, you shouldn’t have spoken about President Baek’s election plans. Politics is never discussed in social gatherings, least of all by women.”

“He brought up how busy he was with elections and I politely asked. What else was I supposed to do?” Katia said, frustrated that the whole evening she was being scolded like a child for saying or doing something that displeased Imo.

“You were supposed to keep quiet. Your opinion does not matter and you should have left it at that.”

She chucked away her bag. “I’m sorry but how else am I supposed to have a conversation?”

“Katia, do not look me in the eye when you’re talking to me. I am your elder and you know nothing about the Korean way of life.”

Katia apologized and walked to Jihan’s bedroom where he was pretending to read a book.
